FAQ

The Best Candidates for Breast Reduction
The best candidates for breast reduction are those who are uncomfortable with the larger size of their breasts, whether it is due to appearing disproportionate to the rest of their body, causing back pain due to their size, or simply because they want to feel better about their appearance. Because breast reduction is major surgery, it is important that patients be in good health mentally and physically and have a reasonable attitude about the outcome.
Planning Your Breast Reduction Surgery
To plan for breast reduction surgery, it is necessary to meet with Dr. Diaz to discuss your issues and what you expect out of breast reduction. He also reviews your medical history during this consultation. At that point, he evaluates your breasts and your body to make recommendations about the results so that you have a realistic idea as to the outcome of the surgery.

Additionally, many breast reductions surgeries are considered cosmetic and elective. Because of this, you may need to plan for it in terms of the financial aspect of the procedure. If the surgery is to relieve back and shoulder pain, you may want to check your health insurance plan to see if they provide any coverage for the surgery.

Preparing for Your Breast Reduction Surgery
Prior to breast reduction surgery, there is some preparation in terms of making sure you are in good overall health. This may involve bloodwork and a clearance for surgery from your primary care physician. Also, if you take any blood thinning medications or supplements, you may be asked to stop taking those for up to two weeks prior to the procedure as well as a week following the procedure to allow the healing process to begin and to avoid excess bleeding and bruising.

Because breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, it is necessary to have someone bring you to the procedure, take you home, and stay with you for the first 24 hours following the surgery.

Types of Anesthesia

Breast reduction is typically performed under general anesthesia as it can take several hours to complete depending on whether a breast lift is performed at the same time. With general anesthesia, patients are put to sleep in an unconscious state so that they feel nothing. It is administered through intravenous medications and inhalation. This is common for surgeries that are longer and more involved.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

A breast reduction procedure is a more involved surgery as the surgeon must first remove breast tissue and then reshape the breasts to have a natural and attractive appearance. Breast reductions often involve a breast lift following the actual reduction so that the breasts are in their natural upright position.

To perform the procedure, an incision is made in the breast, most often in one of two ways – under the crease of the breast or around the areola and vertically down the breast. If necessary, the areola may be reduced in size. The breast tissue is then removed, and the breasts are lifted and reshaped to an upright, natural position.

The incisions are then stitched, and bandages are applied followed by gauze wrapped around the breasts several times to keep the breasts in place. A compression bra may be worn as well to hold the breasts in place as the healing process begins.

After Your Breast Reduction Surgery
Most breast reductions are done on an outpatient basis. After the surgery is complete, you are moved to a recovery area where you stay until the anesthesia begins to wear off and you are alert enough to leave with your companion. In the first few days, it is important to rest and allow the incisions to begin healing.

Most patients return to work after a week followed by a normal routine after a month. Scarring is visible but significantly fades over the next several months.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost in Mississippi?

The cost of breast reduction surgery varies with each patient. It is based on the size of the breasts and whether a breast lift is done at the same time. During a consultation, we discuss the cost and our payment options with you. Additionally, we offer financing through CareCredit® and accept cash, checks and major credit cards.

Getting Back to Normal Following Breast Reduction Surgery
The healing process for breast reduction takes about a month. During this time, any bruising and swelling diminish and the incisions heal. Over the next several months, the scars from the incisions greatly diminish and are almost invisible within a year.
Your New Look
Once the healing process is complete, your breasts look smaller but are in their upright, natural position allowing you to participate in more activities and have more options with clothing styles.
