You may be a candidate for blepharoplasty if you have excess skin on your upper or lower lids that gives you a very tired and irritated appearance. On the upper eyelids, it is quite possible that your vision may be affected as well. Other factors that play into being a good candidate include being in good health and having a realistic outlook as to the results of the procedure. If you suffer from any health issues related to thyroid disease, high blood pressure, or a condition in which you don’t make enough tears, you may not be able to have this procedure.

Planning for your blepharoplasty consists of scheduling a consultation with Dr. Diaz for an evaluation of your eyelids to determine if blepharoplasty or another procedure is the best option to correct and enhance your eyelids. During this appointment, he also evaluates your overall health and wellbeing to ensure you can have the surgery and properly heal.

Preparing for Your Blepharoplasty

Planning for your blepharoplasty involves getting everything together at home so that immediately following surgery, you can return home for rest and recuperation. It is necessary to arrange for transportation to and from the procedure as well as someone to stay with you for the first day.

Additionally, you may be asked to refrain from smoking for a few weeks prior to and following the surgery as it can impede the healing process. You should also stop taking medications and supplements that thin the blood.

Types of Anesthesia

General anesthesia. General anesthesia renders patients unconscious during the surgery and unable to feel anything. Medications are given intravenously and through inhalation.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

Very small incisions are made typically in the creases of the eyelids so they are not visible to remove excess skin and/or excess fatty deposits. If necessary, muscles are tightened and the incisions are closed.

For the lower eyelids, incisions are made in the lower lid to remove the excess skin and any fatty tissue. The lower eyelid surgery is better suited for younger patients, as the results look more natural on skin with more elasticity.
Blepharoplasty typically takes one to two hours to complete.

After Your Blepharoplasty

Recovering from blepharoplasty takes only about two weeks. Most patients may begin reading after a couple of days and return to work within a week or so. There may be some redness around the incisions, which diminishes and disappears within two to three weeks. As this lessens, concealer may be gently applied once the incisions have healed. It is important to avoid bending over, heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for three to four weeks.
