FAQ
The Best Candidates for Breast Augmentation
Planning Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
To plan for breast augmentation, you first need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Diaz to talk about your concerns and what you want out of the surgery. Additionally, he evaluates your breasts, overall health, and medical history, including any history of breast cancer.
Other factors for which to plan for breast augmentation include the financial and recovery factors. We can work with you regarding the financial aspect by offering options. As for recovery, it is suggested that you arrange for help at home during the first few days following breast augmentation, especially when children are there.
Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
Types of Anesthesia
Breast augmentation is usually performed under general anesthesia. Anesthesia with sedation is necessary to relax the patient to sleep while the procedure is performed.
General anesthesia. General anesthesia allows patients to be unconscious while the surgery is done. This allows them to feel nothing. With general anesthesia, they receive medications intravenously and through inhalation. Longer, more involved surgeries are typically performed with general anesthesia.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery is as individualized as each patient based on what the goals of the procedure are. It entails making an incision in one of three ways:
Periareolar Incisions: These incisions are used with all implants and go around the outer edge of the areola to allow implants to be placed above or below the muscle.
Transaxillary Incisions: These are done in the armpit to hide the scar so that they are not very visible.
Inframammary Incision: This incision is placed under the breast as there is more control when placing the implant.
No matter which way the incisions are done, the implants are placed either behind the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle (chest) depending on the type and size of the implant.
Once the implant is placed, the incisions are closed, and the area is bandaged and wrapped with gauze. Breast augmentation typically takes up to two hours. We recommend waiting a day or two before showering.
