To be the best candidate for breast enhancement, it is important to understand what is involved in the procedures and have realistic expectations. A woman’s breasts change with age, after childbirth and nursing, significant weight loss, and with a mastectomy. It is also important to be in reasonably good health as breast enhancement is major surgery that requires a period of recovery and healing.

Because there is a recovery period, we recommend that patients rest for several days at the very minimum to allow the healing process to begin. Preparing for Breast Enhancement/Reconstruction

Breast enhancement is considered major surgery no matter what type of procedure is planned. Prior to the surgery, there are several steps patients must go through to ensure the success of the surgery. Some of the steps include a preoperative check-up and bloodwork. In addition, patients must stop taking certain medications and supplements that tend to thin the blood along with not smoking at least a week prior to the procedure. Types of Anesthesia

Breast enhancement procedures require patients to be asleep as the procedures are involved and take some to time to perform. Because of this, breast enhancement procedures are done using general anesthesia.

General anesthesia. General anesthesia allows patients to be unconscious while the surgery is done. This allows them to feel nothing. With general anesthesia, they receive medications intravenously and through inhalation. Longer, more involved surgeries are typically performed with general anesthesia.

Prior to the actual breast enhancement surgery, you receive a detailed list of post-operative instructions to follow in the days and weeks after your surgery. Much of the immediate time following surgery involves lots of rest to allow the body to begin healing itself.

Getting Back to Normal Following Breast Enhancement/Reconstruction Surgery

After breast enhancement surgery, patients require rest for a week or two to allow the incisions to begin healing and the internal healing to begin. Most patients may return to work within a week to 10 days but must take it easy with no strenuous activity including heavy lifting and exercise (except walking) for up to four weeks. Within a month, the healing is complete, for the most part, and normal activities may be resumed.
