Gynecomastia in Biloxi, MS

Michael Diaz, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified plastic surgeon in Biloxi, MS, performs gynecomastia surgery on men in and around Southern Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama who want to have a more masculine-looking chest.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia is a gender-specific condition in which men have extra tissue in the chest that causes them to have what appear to be breasts. This condition affects millions of teens and men and is a result from having excess glandular tissue in the breast area. The result is often emotionally taxing on those who suffer from it, as they are extremely self-conscious.

To correct gynecomastia, male breast reduction surgery is performed to remove the excess tissue, fat, and skin. The targeted area is then molded to provide a firmer, more masculine-looking chest.

The Best Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

The best candidates for gynecomastia surgery are those who are very self-conscious about their appearance, maintain a relatively normal weight, and are at an age where they are fully grown or developed. Male breast reduction surgery is an individualized procedure that requires realistic expectations of the results. Adolescents may possibly undergo gynecomastia, but additional procedures may be required in the future if further breast development takes place.

Planning Your Gynecomastia Surgery

To plan for male breast reduction surgery, it is important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Diaz to discuss your aesthetic goals. With gynecomastia surgery, while the chest is flattened and firmer following the procedure, it does not create larger pectoral muscles that develop from strengthening and weight lifting. It does, however, make it possible to contour and showcase the results if you consistently work out.

Gynecomastia surgery is an elective procedure and considered not medically necessary. Because of this, there may be some financial planning in terms of saving for the procedure or setting up financing since most healthcare plans do not provide coverage for elective procedures.

Because this surgery involves anesthesia, it is necessary to have transportation to and from the procedure along with having someone stay with you for the first 24 hours following the procedure. The recovery requires a week of rest away from work as well as no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a month following the surgery.

Preparing for Your Gynecomastia Surgery

Prior to having male breast reduction surgery, there are several evaluations that must take place including an overall health check-up and bloodwork to ensure you are in good health. Additionally, it is important that if you smoke, you stop about two weeks prior to the surgery as well as two weeks following. You should avoid any medications or supplements that thin the blood, as this may hinder healing and recovery. If necessary, you may be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection from the surgery.

Types of Anesthesia

During your gynecomastia surgery, you receive medications to make the procedure more comfortable. The types of anesthesia to be used include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia.

General anesthesia: With general anesthesia, patients are rendered unconscious while the surgery is performed to allow them to feel nothing. The medications are intravenous and through inhalation. Longer, more involved surgeries are typically performed with general anesthesia.

The Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure

Male breast reduction surgery enlists one of two techniques: liposuction or excision. During your pre-operative evaluation, Dr. Diaz determines which technique is the best option to achieve your desired look.

Liposuction: Liposuction is used when excess fatty tissue causes gynecomastia. With this technique, a cannula is inserted into the area through several small incisions. As the cannula is moved back and forth, the excess fat is loosened and removed via a vacuum suction.

Excision: When excision techniques are used, glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. This is also used to reduce the size of the areola or to reposition the nipple to look more masculine.

Once the procedure is complete, the chest area is bandaged and wrapped. A compression vest is placed on you to help protect and support the chest area.

After Your Gynecomastia Surgery

You must wear the compression wrap for two to four weeks following the procedure. During the first 24 hours following the surgery, you must have someone help you, as you will still have the remnants of the anesthesia in your system and require rest. If necessary, you may require pain medication for any discomfort during the first few days. You may return to work about a week after your surgery and once you have the approval of your surgeon during a follow-up appointment; however, you may not participate in heavy lifting or strenuous activities for about four weeks.

Getting Back to Normal Following Breast Lift Surgery

You may return to work about a week after your surgery once you have the approval of your surgeon during a follow-up appointment; however, you may not participate in heavy lifting or strenuous activities for about four weeks.

Your New Look

For many men, the results from male breast reduction are permanent. Scars are permanent. However, they are placed in very inconspicuous areas, so they not noticeable. The results of your surgery take a few months to reveal themselves but once you fully recover and heal, your chest has a much more masculine appearance, and you have a renewed sense of self-confidence.
